  • Fantastic Film School’s Asian Filmmakers’ Lab

The Fantastic Film School, presented by the Network of Asian Fantastic Films (NAFF) of the Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival (PiFan), has grown to include renowned programs for film developers worldwide. The submission process to undertake these rare classes are over. For the few that will be accepted, they will be treated to a life-changing workshop.

Some of the participants that make up this year’s Fantastic Film School are from:  Korea, Japan, China, Hong Kong, Philippines, Taiwan, Singapore, Vietnam and Indonesia. Just to get an idea of how fierce this competition was, applicants were accepted from 14 different Asian countries. Each candidate had to submit a meticulous application. Local applicants have already gone through an interview process, while applicants from abroad will have a chance to answer a handful of interview questions themselves and submit them via Youtube or other video-sharing websites.

The Fantastic Film School, which runs this year from July 18th to the 24th, annually invites some of the most esteemed professionals in the film business to lecture at the Fantastic Film School. This year, under the theme, “Asian Filmmakers’ Lab,” the school will have guest lecturers: Barry Sabath, Chris LEE, John Heinsen, and KIM Ji-hoon. Barry Sabath is a senior lecturer for AFI, and holds an MA and Ph.D in Cinema Studies from NYU, and as an executive at Columbia Pictures, Mr. Sabath consulted over 30 projects in development. He will lead a discussion on how to develop a script from each participant’s own works during his lecture.

Producer Chris LEE, who has produced blockbuster movies such as Superman Returns and Final Fantasy, will talk about co-producing in Hollywood. John Heinsen is currently the Executive Producer & CEO of Bunnygraph Entertainment and Vice Chairman of New-Media Council for the Producers Guild of America. Mr. Heinsen will talk about “Transmedia Storytelling” in this year’s Asian Filmmakers’ Lab. KIM Ji-hoon, who directed the hit movie The Tower, will enlighten the participants with the art of directing and will lecture on how to master a scene-by-scene analysis from one of his movies.

The 2013 Fantastic Film School will be a week of intense learning and networking.  The knowledge these participants will gain from a group of mentors that are active professionals today is priceless. From production to distribution, the participants at this program will graduate with a holistic knowledge of the film business, giving them a serious advantage to further elevate the Asian film movement.
