“Quality Is More Important Than Number of Viewers”
A press conference on the close of the 14th
Jeonju International Film Festival was held with the participation of KOH Seok-man, chairman of the Festival Organizing Committee, director Darezhan OMIRBAYEV, director
RYOO Seung-wan, director
Shin Yeon-shick, writer KIM Yeong-hwa, programmer LEE Sang-yong and programmer KIM Yeong-jin on the morning of May 3rd. The festival ran from April 25th to May 3rd and screened 117 features and 61 short films from 46 countries and 12 event films. The number of screenings reached 319, an increase of 22 from the year before. But the numbers of theaters, seats and audiences somewhat decreased. “This year, we strived to attract as many spectators as possible,” said Chairman KOH about the decrease in audiences. “Audiences’ passion and enthusiasm are more important than the number of viewers.” “More important is how the quality of the festival improved, whether or not the identity of the festival was maintained and whether or not our future language was suggested,” KOH added. “I wish the festival had attracted more people. But I am not ashamed of the figure.”
Last year, the festival introduced many films that reflected the spirit of directors and experimental films. This year, more popular films were screened. “The programmers and I thought that we needed to open the festival further,” KOH said. “We have to maintain popularity at a certain level on the foundation of the identity of the Jeonju International Film Festival.”
“This film festival should meet a more controversial film in the future,” said RYOO Seung-wan who took part as a judge in the international competition section. “There should be controversial issues and highly competitive films.”
