  • ISAN Korea Registration Agency Now Open
  • by June Kim /  Feb 25, 2015
  • Moving to Standardization System and Finding Long Term Storage of Digital Films

Following the signing that took place at the Korean Film Council (Chairman: KIM Sae-hoon, KOFIC)’s Industry Forum Seminar during the Busan International Film Festival last year, the Korean ISAN agency became fully operational on February 17th. On October 6th, 2014, KOFIC’s previous chairman KIM Eui-suk and International Standard Audiovisual Number (ISAN)’s Régis Flad sat down to sign and found the ISAN registration agency in Korea. Seeking to standardize audio visual materials and to find strategies for long-term storage and preservation in the midst of the digital era, KOFIC has become the first agency to register in Asia.

The International Standard Audiovisual Number (ISAN) creates a standard to manage and track audiovisual contents, similar to the ISBN system for books. Currently there are 20 ISAN Registration Agencies covering 65 countries worldwide. By providing a unique code for each unique content, a work can be identified from the ISAN number alone as each part of the ISAN relates to descriptive meta-data. ISAN is becoming mandatory in several countries, and aims to expand into becoming a universal code. It can also provide heightened security by tracking the number for illegal activity.

“Thanks to ISAN-IA’s full support, ISAN Korea has launched a meaningful service for not only the Korean audiovisual work industry, but the global one,” said KIM Sae-hoon, Chairman of KOFIC.
