  • Introducing Korean Filmmaking at India’s Film Bazaar

As part of its expansion to new markets this year, the Korean Film Council (KOFIC, Chairman: KIM Eui-suk) has chosen India as the latest region to reach out to and promote Korean films. During India’s sole film market, Film Bazaar, which was held from November 20th to 24th in Goa, KOFIC organized a special discussion panel to introduce the Korean film industry and also to talk about the different programs that KOFIC offers in support of shooting in Korea.

The session, titled ‘How to Shoot Film in South Korea,’ was held on the evening of the 21st with Daniel H. BYUN, the Commissioner of the Korean Film Council, TPS Company CEO YI Jong-ho, Indian Director Anurag BASU, Fox Star Studio’s Parth ARORA, the Korean Tourism Organization’s Seema KALA and Liz Shackleton of Screen International, who served as moderator. The session focuses on the Korean film industry’s production system.

Film Bazaar is held annually in conjunction with the International Film Festival of India and provides various labs, pitching sessions and facilitates sales of films, with a focus on South Asia. Although both the Indian film industry and the Korean film industry have matured and are gaining international recognition, there is little mutual understanding on each side. Hence the ‘How to Shoot Film in South Korea’ panel was a good opportunity for the two industries to come together and understand each other, communicate and exchange valuable information. It started off with KOFIC’s International Co-Production Team Manager HAN Sang-hee’s presentation on the Korean film industry. The brief was then followed by the panel discussion.

At the panel, KOFIC’s Daniel BYUN commented that “Korea has a good system set in place for international filmmakers to come and shoot film, such as the KOFIC Location Incentive.” Following up on BYUN’s comments, Indian Director Anurag BASU, who had an opportunity to shoot in Korea through his 2004 film Gangster said, “I would love to go back to Korea and shoot again.”

80 companies and organizations took part in business meetings during the market. KOFIC also met with Yash Raj Film, one of India’s largest film companies, to introduce the Location Incentive program. Although it’s a small step towards building a relationship with the Indian film industry, it will act as a starting point for future partnerships.
