  • Tyra Banks and America’s Next Top Model Shot in Korea
  • by June Kim /  Nov 17, 2014
  • KOFIC’s Location Incentive Supports the TV Series

A famous TV series on its 21st season, America’s Next Top Model, filmed in Korea this March. Along with the show’s host and executive producer Tyra Banks, PR Maven’s Kelly Cutrone, runway coach J. Alexander, and creative consultant Yu Tsai flew into the country. As for the crew, 12 producers, 3 directors, and at a total of 90 American staff and crew were involved, while on the Korean side, production manager, location manager, art director, lighting director, and production assistants added up to 70 staffs.

The shoot took place from March 21st until April 4th for 15 days at Seoul’s Shin-chung-sa, Eul-ji-ro, and Myung-dong. The series has 15 episodes in total and the episodes shot in Korea will be shown from 11th episode to the final show, a total of 5 episodes. They were aired on November 7th and 14th, and the next 3 episodes will be on November 21st, December 5th and December 12th.

Production Manager KIM Woo-kyung said that America’s Next Top Model chose Korea as they saw Korean fashion industry as a blooming one, with designers becoming more global and making marks outside of their home ground. KIM added that along with the K-pop industry becoming popular, the world has been keeping their eyes on Korea. Not only that, US noticed that the Korean-Americans are strong members of the American fashion industry, and the digital and technological development of Korea was also something that attracted the makers of America’s Next Top Model and resulted in their decision to shoot in Korea.

Another reason why America’s Next Top Model might have saw shooting in Korea as an opportunity was because of the Location Incentive Program that Korean Film Council (KOFIC) offers. KOFIC covers up to 30% of the expenses through cash rebate on foreign audio-visual works' production expenditure incurred for goods and services in Korea. Other than America’s Next Top Model, the Avengers: Age of Ultron and Sense8 were also shot this year with the help of the Location Incentive Program.
