  • KOFIC’s 2014 April Film Industry Report
  • by June KIM /  May 19, 2014
  • Foreign Offerings Beat Domestic Films at Korean Box Office

2014 April admissions decreased by 18% compared to last year, down to 9.2 million with sales down by 14.4% to KRW 72.1 billion. Most films that saw successes at the box office were Hollywood superhero titles including Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which took the top spot and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in second, while only two Korean titles, Broken and The Fatal Encounter, broke into the top ten list. No domestic titles exceeded one million admissions.

Concerning distributors, Sony Pictures Releasing Walt Disney Studios Korea had the highest audience share due to Captain America: The Winter Soldier, with 48.6%. CJ Entertainment, which represented Broken, placed in second.

    American films rule over April
The top ten films in April were 80% international and 20% domestic. The international titles were all from America, dominating the Korean film market.

    Alternative Film: Diminishing Diversity Films
Films that were invited to film festivals and received positive acclaim abroad were released domestically and it was expected that the alternative market would yield a positive result. However, looking at admissions and revenue, while the first quarter reached similar accomplishments (January: 350,000, February: 350,000, March: 320,000), the total in April fell to 130,000.
