  • 2014 Q1 Film Market Report
  • by June KIM /  Apr 14, 2014
  • Market retains similar size as 2013

1st quarter of 2014 saw 54.6 million admissions which is a decrease from 2013 with 55.4 million. However, the revenue went up by 220 million KRW to a total of 408.5 billion KRW, evening out the market.

Audience share for Korean films in January was 57.7%, February was 53.4%, and March with 26.2%, and has been continuously decreasing. After The Attorney and Miss Granny’s popularity on the screen in the beginning of the year, the audiences seem to have shifted to international flicks. Frozen, Non-stop, 300: Rise of an Empire, Noah, Captain America: The Winter Soldier have been receiving attention and raised the audience share for international films up to 50.9%.

When looking at the market share by country, Korea took 49.1%, USA with 44.5%, Europe with 4.2%, Japan with 1.4% and others together are merely 1.0% which means that the market is still dominated by Korean and American titles.

Sony Pictures Releasing Walt Disney Studio Korea was in first place out of the distributors with audience share of 23.8% due to major titles like Frozen and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Closely behind was CJ E&M with 23.6% audience share with Miss Granny, Noah, and Tabloid Truth. 3rd place is NEW Entertainment with The Attorney and Non-stop, and 4th place is 10.2% Lotte Entertainment with Hot Young Bloods and Pompeii.

In the alternative market, Inside Llewyn Davis gathered 104,000 admissions to hit the top spot, while Cannes’ award winner, Like Father, Like Son received 73,000 to take the 3rd place and Dallas Buyers Club is in 4th with 68,000. The Korean titles in the alternative film category, Murderer is in 2nd with 88,000, The Satellite Girl and Milk Cow in 7th, and MANSHIN: Ten Thousand Spirits at 10th place.
