    The 37th Blue Dragon Awards was held on November 25th. The political thriller Inside Men received prizes in the Best Film and Best Actor (LEE Byung-hun) fields, while NA Hong-jin’s horror-thriller THE WAILING took home the Best Director, Best Supporting Actor (KUNIMURA Jun), Best Music and Best Editing awards. The Best Actress award went to KIM Min-hee of the Colonial Era thriller The Handmaiden, which won a triple crown including the Best New Actress (KIM Tae-ri) and the Best Art Direction award. 

    It seems to be a closure for a year when Blue Dragon Awards winners are announced. There have been a lot of movies in the spotlight both at home and abroad this year, such as THE WAILING, The Handmaiden, TRAIN TO BUSAN and The Age of Shadows. Therefore, let’s have a look which movies and filmmakers have taken trophies from various film awards. 

    The Buil Film Awards, one of the oldest film awards in Korea, selected the crime thriller Veteran for this year’s Best Film. The Best Director award was for Colonial Era drama DONGJU; The Portrait of A Poet’s director LEE Joon-ik, and the Best Actor and Best Actress awards were for LEE Byung-hun of Inside Men and SON Ye-jin of The Truth Beneath, respectively. 

    Meanwhile, this year’s Baeksang Arts Awards presented to diverse films. Director LEE Joon-ik was honored with the Grand Prize for The Throne and DONGJU; The Portrait of A Poet, while the Best Film prize went to the Colonial Era action thriller Assassination. The Best Director prize was given to RYOO seung-wan for Veteran. The Best Actor and Best Actress prizes went to LEE Byung-hun for Inside Men and JEON Do-yeon for The Shameless

    Korean Association of Film Critics Awards (KAFC) chose KIM Jee-woon’s The Age of Shadows as the Best Film, LEE Kyoung-mi (The Truth Beneath) as the Best Director, LEE Byung-hun as the Best Actor (Inside Men) and SON Ye-jin (The Truth Beneath) as the Best Actress. Especially, LEE Byung-hun has swept almost all Best Actor prizes from local film awards. 

    The performance of LEE received acceptance by directors as well as jury members of film awards and cinema critics. The Korean Directors’ Association has announced the winners of Director’s Cut Awards this year. NA Hong-jin won the Best Director prize for THE WAILING, while the Best Actor and Actress awards went to LEE Byung-hun for Inside Men and KIM Min-hee for The Handmaiden. In addition, JANG Jae-hyun obtained the Best New Director for the exorcism thriller The Priests.
