  • Animated Movies for Family at the Diversity Box Office
     

    Diversity films usually belong to independent or art genre in Korea. However, another genre guarantees box office success — family animated movies for children. Cute and fun hits stand out from serious art films at the diversity box office.

    In third place on the overall diversity box office and the top among animations was Rock Dog with 232,000 moviegoers as of November 19th. The film depicts an adventure of a sheepdog that wants to be a rock star. The Magic Brush which is a rare Chinese animation in Korea followed with 169,000 viewers. In eighth place was Norm of the North with 161,000 admissions, which is about cute polar bears moving to New York. French animation The Little Prince, which was released on December 23rd in 2015, drew 580,000 filmgoers, but ranked ninth as the animation drew 150,000 admissions in 2016. Foosball with 143,000 viewers was 12th overall and fifth among animated films. 

    Also, domestic animated movies were doing well. It was not a family film, but the zombie animation Seoul Station ranked 11th at the diversity box office attracting 147,000 audiences, while it was second best among Korean diversity films. Bling with 90,000 entries and DINO X EXPEDITION with 83,000 viewers scored 27th and 30th place at the entire diversity box office, and 5th and 6th place among local diversity films respectively.
