  • Toward a New Record, Runs the Train
  • by KIM Hyun-jung /  Aug 10, 2016
  • Korean Films with the Biggest Opening Score Record of All Time

TRAIN TO BUSAN, released on July 20th, reached 10 million viewers as of August 7th. It is the first 10 million admissions film of this year, and it already made great news from the beginning, attracting 872,517 viewers on the very first day of release, which is the biggest record of Korean cinema all time. It is a number even bigger than Captain America: Civil War, a Hollywood blockbuster released on April 27th, receiving 727,901 admissions, thus holding the previous record of biggest opening score in Korea.

Before TRAIN TO BUSAN, the former record holder for the biggest opening among domestic films was Roaring Currents (2014). Hitting 682,701 admissions on the first day, the film took the throne, easily replacing Secretly Greatly (2013) with 498,158 admissions. Currently in the third place is The Thieves (2012), with 436,596 viewers, which is slightly more than 431,704 of The Tower (2012) at the fourth place. At the fifth place is The Host (2006) with 395,951 viewers.

Of course a great beginning does not guarantee a great finish. Among the top 5 biggest opening Korean films, Secretly Greatly and The Tower did not reach 10 million viewers. However, TRAIN TO BUSAN is running as fast as the KTX train towards Busan. It is already at the 16th place of the all time Korean box office, including both domestic and foreign films. Where would be the final destination of this bullet train?
