  • The Top 5 Domestic and Foreign Films of 2015

Though thy beginning was small, yet thy latter end should greatly increase. This bible verse summarizes the 2015 Korean box office. Due to lack of big movies and outbreak of MERS, the box office in the first half was in trouble. However, it gained vitality in summer with Korean blockbusters like Assassination and Veteran, and ended the year strong with the record of the biggest annual audience ever as of December 28th. The total number of viewers in domestic theaters adds up to 215,212,288, which is more than last year’s 215,067,760. 2015 is also the third successive year to hit 200 million viewers.

In such dynamic 2015 box office, let us review which domestic and foreign films did particularly well. The first and second biggest Korean movies are Veteran and Assassination, attracting 13.4 million and 12.7 million viewers respectively. The runner up is Ode to My Father, released in December 2014, with 8.9 million admissions. With the performance in 2014 included, this is also another 10-million-viewers movie. The fourth and fifth in the chart are Inside Men (6.9 million admissions) and The Throne (6.2 million admissions). These two films took the fifth and sixth places in the entire box office, but Inside Men is still in theaters, doing great.

The only foreign film in the top 5 chart predominantly occupied by Korean movies is The Avengers: Age of Ultron, which received 10.49 million admissions, being the only foreign 10-million-viewers movie. The runner ups are Kingsman: The Secret Service (6.13 million admissions) and Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation (6.126 million admissions), occupying the 7th and 8th places in the entire box office by a whisker. The 4th place in the foreign movie box office (and the 10th place in the entire box office) is taken by Jurassic World which attracted 5.55 million viewers. It swept the global summer box office with a variety of records, but did not do so well in Korea. Inside Out is ranked at the 12th place in the entire box office with 4.97 million viewers, which is a successful result for Pixar which has been rather weak in the past in the Korean box office.
