  • Strongly Interact With Korean Audiences

  • 2015’s Sparkled Foreign Films in Korea

Korea has a population of 51.5 million which ranks 26th in the world in population size. However Koreans watch average 4.19 films per year so it is a considerable film market attracting about 200 million moviegoers per year. Though Korea is a sizeable film market relative to its population, it is also unpredictable one. Juicy movies like The Intern and Whiplash did better than expected, and some blockbusters including The Martian, Mad Max: Fury Road and Kingsman: The Secret Service hit the domestic box office in spite of its market scale.

First of all, Korean audiences love musical films. Begin Again (2013) brought USD 25.87 million in Korea winning USD 16.17 million in US. Musical animation Frozen (2013) has the second highest ticket sales after Japan outside US. Nevertheless Whiplash’s success is remarkable. The film grossed USD 11.42 million recording number one among overseas film markets while it earned USD 13.09 million in US.

Another surprising success is The Intern. The film which climbed from the fourth place to the top in the local box office chart, recorded number one (USD 24.54 million) in overseas film market. It is for reminding reality of uncertain employment in Korean society, as well as warm humanity and romance.

Moreover, blockbusters are loved. Mad Max: Fury Road topped among overseas market (USD 29.07 million), Kingsman: The Secret Service was number two (USD 46.88 million) after China. Kingsman: The Secret Service earned more than its hometown England. Mad Max: Fury Road is a handcraft action movie while Kingsman: The Secret Service is a black comedy embracing blood scenes. Both are not typical blockbusters.

Also, Korean audiences love space. Interstellar (2014) and Gravity (2013), somewhat serious sci-fi blockbusters, hit the box office in Korea, and now The Martian (USD 3.41 million) is running for number two or three of overseas sales with England.

It is reasonable that slam dunk films make a hit. However, it can be fun to see film markets when small movies, art movies, serious blockbusters and action films with too strong individuality are unexpectedly successful. It is hard to predict box office like our future.
