  • Nostalgia to the Audience, New Life to the Films
  • by KIM Hyun-jung /  Nov 13, 2015
  • Box Office Performance of Re-released Films

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind made a wonderful record of 55,000 viewers in just 4 days since the re-release on November 5th. It was of course the winner in the diversity box office and ranked at the 8th place in the entire box office. Even after the weekend, on the 9th, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind was at the third place in the booking rank. However, what is even more interesting is that when this film was released for the first time in 2005, it only had 170,000 admissions.

On October 21st 2015, the day where the hero Marty (Michael J. Fox) flew to the future in a time machine, Back to the Future was re-released worldwide and did well. Until November 8th, Back to the Future part 1 and 2 received 26,000 viewers in Korea which is a moderate success for a film in the diversity section. It also clicked with nostalgia of the world audience and had USD 4.8 million profit worldwide just on the first day.

The best selling re-release movie in Korea until Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind was Secret. Re-released in last May, this film had 57,000 admissions. In addition, Shallow Grave, Amadeus, Let Me In, Rocky, and The Girl Who Leapt through Time are on the re-release list. Love Letter and Leon which attracted 48,000 and 42,000 viewers respectively when re-released in 2013 would be the pioneers of this re-release boom.

The reason for such re-release would be the presence of devoted fans who love watching the same film several times. They can now see the films again but this time with a clearer visual quality as digital remastering technology advances. For example, Joint Security Area /JSA re-opened on October 15th in the 4K Atmos, with improved visual and audio quality. Development of IPTV is also a big factor in the re-release trend. Once re-played in the theater, films have higher VOD price and also earn distinctive name value among tons of VODs.

Whatever the roots are, film re-release is welcome, as it feeds nostalgia to the audience, profit to the film industry and new life to the films.
