The Beauty Inside to be released on August 20 stars a whopping 21 lead actors. Six minutes for one lead actor can translate into 126 minutes. 126 minutes is longer than two hours, a normal running time of a film. How could this kind of film be made? This is because lead character Woo-jin of The Beauty Inside finds that his appearance changes whenever he wakes up in the morning. The film stars KIM Joo-hyuk, LEE Beom-su, Japanese actress UENO Juri, LEE Jin-wook, CHUN Woo-hee, KIM Sang-ho, KO Asung, YOO Yeon-seok, LEE Dong-wook and more. This big cast of many lead actors regardless of gender and ages reminds people of not an ‘action blockbuster’ but an ‘actor blockbuster’. 

 

Usually a film is made with two or three lead actors and three or four main supporting actors. There are many films which star bunches of lead actors like 12 Angry Men by Sidney LUMET which indicates that the film stars 12 main actors via its title. In this respect, Silmido is the most memorable Korean film in the 2000s. 31 actors play South Korean commandos to be sent to North Korea and two of their training officers are played by AHN Sung-ki and HU Joon-ho. SUL Kyung-gu had photos taken with all of the actors who played the commandos claiming that all of them were heroes of the film when the weekly film magazine Cine 21 would take photos of them for the cover of the magazine which featured Silmido.  

 

Many films publicize that they are ‘actor blockbusters’ from their posters although they do not star as many lead actors as Silmido. Ten thieves appear in The Thieves’ poster where professional Korean and Hong Kong thieves steal. Ode to My Father about the checkered life of a father shows nine family members and friends in its poster. Six striking actors made an appearance in the poster of Tazza-The Hidden Card. Miracle in Cell No. 7 is also a representative multi-casting film since the film is set against the backdrop of a cell and six cellmates live together in the cell.

 

A film can contain many things to see – a beautiful set, spectacular action and a nail-biting chase. But a song sung by one singer can be as wonderful as a performance by an orchestra consisting of dozens of members. Similarly one actor can show a spectacle as good as those created by special effects like 300, a film with many scenes of well built actors which won praise that actors’ bodies were the best special effects.
