Northern Limit Line Retakes Box Office after Six Days
The South Korean Navy defeated the powerful Cyborg T-3000.
Northern Limit Line, a film based on the South Korean Navy’s battle with the North Korean Navy that undertook a surprise offensive in 2002 enjoyed placing first at the Korean box office for eight days since its release on June 24. But
Terminator Genisys, a Hollywood blockbuster was released on July 2, dethroning the sea battle film from the top.
The tide turned on July 7. On the day, Northern Limit Line outstripped Terminator Genisys in the box office duel as the former drew 152,887 viewers at 846 screens (37.3% of total daily sales on the day) while the latter 134,194 viewers at 1,029 screens. Northern Limit Line’s victory over Terminator Genisys was attributable to patriotism marketing that appealed to Korean audiences. So, marketers of the film set June 24, one day before June 25 when the Korean War broke out in 1950 as the date of its release.
But the box office battle did not end. After Terminator Genisys recaputured the top of the box office once, as of 9 pm on July 10, Inside Out held first place, followed by Northern Limit Line and Terminator Genisys in reserved ticket sales rankings. Finally, on July 10, Northern Limit Line which drew 166,184 viewers defeated Terminator Genenisys chosen by 121,748 viewers and became winner of hot summer war.
