  • Box Office Results of Hong Kong Film Remakes

Believer has stopped foreign movies’ triumphant run in the theaters. Released on May 22nd, this crime thriller is on the verge of breaking the 2 million viewers’ mark, after surpassing 1 million moviegoers after four days and garnering 1.79 million viewers total in just six days. Believer is the fastest Korean movie to accomplish the 1 million viewers’ milestone in 2018 and its success rekindled interest for its original movie, Johnny TO’s noir action Drug War. The Hong Kong noir film was a box office failure in Korea, with only 322 viewers, but has been receiving huge attention from movie fans recently, eager to compare the best scenes between the old and new versions. Believer is not the only remake of a Hong Kong film. Based on the 2007 Hong Kong crime thriller Eye In The Sky, Cold Eyes (2013) caught 5,508,017 moviegoers’ attention in Korea, thanks to its diverse characters stories and more advanced cinematic techniques than the original film. On the other hand, A Better Tomorrow (2010), remake of John WOO’s seminal gangster drama of the same title, recorded 1,571,432 tickets sales. Remakes of Hong Kong films have thus been doing well in the domestic box office. It now remains to be seen whether the recent hit crime action Believer will be able to beat Cold Eyes’s record.
