  • Small but Valuable Results of Jim Jarmusch’s Movies

  • Jim Jarmusch’s Poetic Films

Filmmaker Jim Jarmusch has made poetic films. His breakthrough film Stranger Than Paradise (1984), with its intentionally unfilled scenes and winter landscape gloomier than the people of Cleveland, Ohio, shows the beauty of black and white film footage and is far from conventional films. In 1984, this independent film received the Caméra d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival and the Golden Leopard at the Locarno International Film Festival, making him a star of the independent film world.

Unlike ordinary indie film directors who usually leave the indie world after receiving love calls from major productions, Jim Jarmusch has done well while remaining in the American indie film industry for 35 years. He directed a variety of short and feature-length films because he is not vulnerable to capital. His films such as Down By Law, Mystery Train and Dead Man offer something extraordinary. Between films, Jarmusch has appeared in other directors’ films and to be frank, he looked more artistic than many of the actors and actresses in those movies.

This cool director has quite a lot of loyal fans in Korea. However, his box office records haven’t been successful. His films have been screened at special programs which are hardly included the official results, with each of them rarely drawing more than 10,000 moviegoers. At least, movies (Broken Flowers and Only Lovers Left Alive) released after launching in the multiplex theater system in Korea have attracted about 20,000 to 30,000 moviegoers. Therefore, his recently released film Paterson is recording meaningful figures at the Korean box office. This independent drama is about a man who writes poems while driving a bus for a living. It has drawn 58,536 viewers and is now expected to surpass 60,000 viewers. It is Jarmusch’s biggest box office success so far.
