  • Box Office Results of Extraordinary Horror Movies

As usual, there were unexpected hit movies released this year. Interestingly, most of them belong to the same genre: Horror. Several American horror movies have been incredible hits this year, even without a star cast. Jordan Peele’s Get Out was the first horror movie to sound the fanfare. This biting horror movie about an African-American man who is invited to his girlfriend’s house starts like a melodrama but adds horrors and thrills. With production costs of only USD 4.5 million (KRW 4.9 billion), Get Out has grossed USD 250 million (KRW 272 billion) at box offices worldwide. It was also successful in Korea, recording higher-than-expected results (2.13 million viewers).

Happy Death Day, another horror movie by Blumhouse Productions which is known for producing high-quality micro-budget horror films, also did well. This slasher spent about USD 4.8 million (KRW 5.2 billion) for its production but grossed USD 100 million (KRW 109 billion) worldwide. In Korea, it is currently playing in theaters nationwide, attracting 1.38 million moviegoers.

New Line Cinema, one of the top production studios along with Blumhouse Productions making horror movies in the United States, has achieved meaningful box office records with It and Annabelle: Creation this year. Stephen King’s It made a stunning USD 690 million (KRW 750 billion) worldwide with production costs of USD 35 million (KRW 38 billion) and broke a box office record that had been held by The Exorcist for the last 44 years. However, this horror film sold only 880,000 tickets in Korea. Annabelle: Creation, another occult horror from New Line Cinema, did well drawing 1.93 million moviegoers nationwide.
