LOVING VINCENT’s Miracle Figures
Loving Vincent, the world’s first, fully oil painted feature film, surpassed 200,000 moviegoers in its first 18 days of release. This ‘art buster’ movie is a special experience for viewers, providing a glimpse into the life and work of Vincent van Gogh while featuring a compelling plot that unfolds like a detective story. In the film, some of Van Gogh’s most famous paintings, such as Self Portrait with Bandaged Ear, The Starry Night and Café Terrace at Night, move vividly on the screen. Loving Vincent has performed well in domestic theaters, recording 33.2% seat occupancy in Korea during a period when the local box office was dominated by Marvel and DC Comics superheroes. Three weeks after its November 4th release, audience numbers total more than 275,634.
Moreover, Loving Vincent has had stunning achievements internationally. Partially funded through a Kickstarter campaign, the film drew a lot of attention thanks to a fake documentary style trailer created by the film’s directors. The movie’s teaser trailer set the Internet on fire, with over 130 million views from around the world. The teaser trailer has been shared over 3 million times through social network services (SNS) with sharing figures expected to increase. Loving Vincent cost USD 5.5 million to make and has grossed USD 12.73 million (KRW 13.8 billion) worldwide. All of the efforts that went into making this extraordinary animated film, including 10 years of production, the help of 107 artists and the use of 62,450 oil painted frames created in Van Gogh’s style, definitely paid off.
