  • Top 10 Re-release Movies from 2013 to 2016

According to the Final Report on the 2016 Korean Film Industry by Korean Film Council (KOFIC), the 90 movies re-released last year was a 164% increase from the 34 re-released in 2013. The main reason for the increase was the successful re-release of Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind. It has led to a re-release boom drawing in 88% more viewers than its original run in Korea in 2005.

Re-released animated features hovered at the top of the box office as they can spend less on marketing costs than newly releases, thanks to their awareness. Four out of the top ten are animated films. Especially, Howl’s Moving Castle stimulated domestic cineastes when it was digitally remastered.

Meanwhile, re-releases of Korean films are still sluggish. Christmas in August (1998) and Old Boy (2003) did not manage to attract many moviegoers when they were re-screened in 2013. Out of the 90 films re-released in last year, only nine were Korean films.
