  • Comparison of the Box Office Results, Korean Films vs. Foreign Films

It’s May and summer box office war is coming. In the meantime, local films and foreign films have been back and forth battling. Let’s have a check ahead of the main game.

Korean films are conventionally strong during Lunar New Year holiday. So North Korea themed thriller Confidential Assignment was the winner in January and February. The film topped the chart in January while Japanese animation Your Name garnered the most moviegoers among foreign films. The number of audiences is 4.86 million and 3.41 million, respectively. In February, Confidential Assignment maintained its first place with 2.95 million viewers while M. Night Shyamalan’s thriller Split was the top foreign movie with 1.2 million spectators.

From March, Hollywood movies seized the power. Disney’s Beauty and the Beast took first place with 3.55 million viewers while crime action The Prison did the best among local films attracting 1.8 million filmgoers. Universal’s blockbuster The Fate of The Furious topped April’s box office with 3.2 million audiences and The Prison still ranked number one out of domestic films with 1.12 million admissions.

As of May, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 is in the first place at the local box office. Will Korean films be able to reclaim the top spot again? Now, summer war begins.
