Interior designer Jung-won (PARK Shin-yang) is planning a wedding, but is suffering from delusion after he witnesses children’s death in the subway. The dead children sit at a new dining table in his marital home. During he is in fear and panic, he bumps into Yun (Gianna JUN) who has narcolepsy. He asks her for help because he gets to know that she can see dead people like him. However, Jung-won faces terrible memories in his past which he had managed to erase.

The Uninvited (2003) is director LEE Soo-yeon’s feature debut. LEE updated the tragedy of growth from her previous short films like The Goggles (2000) and Ra (1998) to extremes in The Uninvited. People in the film grow only physically and cannot be real adults. Their sadness is portrayed through spooky atmosphere of apartment blocks, collapse of new marital home for two, and ghosts at the dining table where the family should be. The Uninvited inexorably says that there is no present or future unless we confront and admit our wounds instead of suppressing them.

Despite starring top stars PARK Shin-yang and Gianna JUN, The Uninvited failed at the box office. It is because there were no popular story and conventional horror that audiences could expect from the film’s casting and genre. Eventually, director LEE had to wait 14 years to release her second feature film. Her upcoming film Bluebeard depicts serial murders in a desolate new town and fear of a man who is conscious of the murders. The fear is similar with that of The Uninvited because it is not simple, but comes from our lives and society. So it would be good to watch The Uninvited before Bluebeard.
