In early 2000s, gangster comedy had been dominating the nation’s theater for a few years. This unique genre created an odd combination of violence and laughter when it started from
My Wife Is a Gangster (2001), and led to successful franchises like
Marrying the Mafia (2002) and
My Boss, My Hero (2001). Also,
Hi, Dharma! (2001) is a gangster comedy. However, the film is not too much comedy, even reflects on our life at some point while other films force brothership, violence and sadistic laughter.
After attacked by a rival gang, Jae-gyu (
PARK Shin-yang) and his men run and hide in a secluded mountain temple. Chief monk (
KIM In-moon) permits them to stay for a week, but other monks including Cheong-myeong (
JUNG Jin-young) revolt against them. So they make a rule that winners who get three games out of five can decide gangs’ position.
Hi, Dharma! is a film with a wonderful handling more than ten characters. Along with Jae-gyu who is aggressive and ignorant but respects people, and Cheong-myeong who is very like a monk but never flinches in front of Jae-gyu, all characters are interesting and individual including a simplehearted gangster, a talkative monk, and a gangster and a monk intertwined with the senior-junior relationship of the marine corps.
Above all, this is more growing film of gangsters and monks. A set that a monk enlightens and leaves is like a cliché, but the journey to the end is not so hackneyed. Also, it is impressive many actors with personalities and great performances including PARK Shin-yang and JUNG Jin-young gathered together.
