While the problem of part-time and contract workers have been looked at before, never has it been as artistically composed as it is in
Factory Complex. Juxtaposing heartfelt interviews of workers with surreal photographic images, the documentary provides breathers in between; while at the same time heightens the tension. Interviewing various female workers from Cambodia and Korea, who has worked at or is working in factories, supermarkets, call centers, and more, the inhumane conditions of the laborers are revealed.
While some of the female workers had tried to stand up for themselves through various protests, the only answer they received as told in their testimonies are neglect and coercion. Some fainted during hunger strike; some were thrown feces at them, while some resulted in an open gunfire that led to deaths. In the coming of the digital age, what has really changed for these workers?
As the first Korean film to be invited to the Venice Biennale’s The International Art Exhibition, Factory Complex is rewriting the history of Korean documentaries.
