200 Pounds Beauty (2006) is a romantic comedy which was directed by
KIM Yong-hwa, helmer of
Take Off (2009) and
Mr. Go (2013). Director KIM made a somewhat disappointing debut with
Oh! Brothers (2003), but secured his position as a comedy director after
200 Pounds Beauty became a hit.
Hanna (
KIM A-joong) is a ghost singer for Ami, the famous pop singer who actually lip-syncs. She has been bright and sincere although she is ugly and weighs more than 200 pounds. She is in love with music producer Sang-jun (
JOO Jin-mo), but it is a one sided love. One day, she overhears Sang-jun laughs at her, so she decides to have plastic surgery all over her body. Hanna threatens the plastic surgeon who is her regular phone sex customer to get her face and body done. At last, Hanna comes back as a perfect beauty in front of Sang-jun but she unconsciously acts like a servant since she has not put away her attitude of old days when she was ignored to be ugly and fat.
200 Pounds Beauty is based on the Japanese big hit comic series by SUZUKI Yumiko. The original story is a comic about a soul of ugly and fat girl in a perfect body, while the film focuses more on romance. It focuses on Hanna’s story to have plastic surgeries and persuades how she is good and deserves to be loved. Moreover, her father with dementia and another fat, ugly friend of her stimulate the audience’s sympathy.
As a result, 200 Pounds Beauty has weaker plot and comic elements than the original story, but it might be more agreeable to the Korean sentiments. The film was a success bringing 6 million viewers, and KIM A-joong’s costumes and her renditions became a great hit. It was like a phenomenon as her renditions ‘Maria’ and ‘Beatiful Girl’ filled every corner of streets at the time.
