Handball player Mi-sook (MOON So-ri) hears the news that her team will be disbanded right after winning the Handball Korea Cup 2004. Players are scattered because they have no team to join. It was the time that there were only five business handball teams in Korea and national players’ daily wage was only USD 20.
Meanwhile, Hye-kyeong (
KIM Jung-eun), who used to be Mi-sook’s rival and took home a gold medal at the Olympics with her, is now a coach of women’s national handball team. She decides to recruit some of her old teammates to improve the team. Even though Mi-sook working in a grocery store and Jung-ran (
KIM Ji-young), who lost her team during in her prime at a comparatively late age, join the national team, Hye-kyeong is replaced by former men’s handball star Seung-pil (
UHM Tae-woong).
Forever The Moment (2008) was
YIM Soon-rye’s third movie in six years after she made a successful debut with
Three Friends (1996) and proved that her success was not by chance with
Waikiki Brothers (2001). And surprisingly,
Forever The Moment was a popular cinema that is totally different from her previous projects with sentiment of outsiders. The film is commercial starring the best actresses while it is brilliantly balancing between comedy and drama.
However, director YIM still has a concern for those who are marginalized to the fringe of society in the film. It was said that 2004 Athens Olympic women’s handball team was the weakest of all time. In addition, director YIM fictionalized the drama of the exhausted because they are women. They suffer from their own problems like divorce, husband’s business failure and gambling addiction, and infertility. Nevertheless, they head for victory together without giving up. It is something unreachable for a man, Seung-pil.
Forever The Moment is in harmony with details: lively handball game scenes through close covers, brilliant performance of actresses who were trained to play handball for a few months, and not too sentimental direction despite depicting the game scenes where all players are wailing.
