Park Chanwook's Decision to Leave, Topped Among Korean Films

Even in the 1st week of July, when the 2022 summer season began, Tom Cruise's Top Gun: Maverick maintained the top at the box office over the weekend. According to the Korean Box Office Information System (KOBIS) of the Korean Film Council (KOFIC), Top Gun: Maverick recorded 1,145,258 audiences from July 1 to 3, maintaining the top in the 2nd week of its release. The weekend sales are USD 9.7 million with 59.2% of the sales share. The total audience of the film since its release on June 22 is 3,329,122.

Given that Top Gun: Maverick's sales share of the weekend in the 2nd week has risen slightly from the first week of its release, it can be expected to be a long-term hit in Korea. Another characteristic is that many people are watching the film in the IMAX theaters and special halls.

Director Park Chanwook’s Decision to Leave, the Best Director winner at the 75th Festival de Cannes, was released on June 29, ranking 2nd at the box office in the 1st week of its release. While blockbuster films such as The Witch: Part 2. The Other One and The Roundup are guarding the theater, Decision to Leave topped the weekend box office among Korean films. The weekend audience of Decision to Leave recorded 320,166. Its weekend sales accounted for 2.5 million USD with 15.6% of the sales share.

With the release of Decision to Leave, The Witch: Part 2. The Other One and The Roundup fell one level to 3rd and 4th, respectively. The Witch: Part 2. The Other One attracted 213,106 viewers over the weekend, while The Roundup added 200,136 viewers over the weekend. The total number of audiences of The Roundup recorded 12,416,795, including the number of audiences over the 1st weekend of July. As a result, The Roundup exceeded the total number of audiences of Masquerade, ranking 13th at the box office in the history of Korean cinema.  C'mon C'mon, starring Joaquin Phoenix, released on June 30, ranked 10th at the weekend box office.

The total number of audiences on the 1st weekend of July was 1,974,344, and with the popularity of Top Gun: Maverick, the audience share by nationality recorded 49.5% for Korean films and 50.5% for foreign films.
