KOFIC and Women in Film Korea Open ‘Center for Gender Equality in Korean Cinema’

New Organization Will Conduct Research, Offer Services to Victims

The #MeToo and #TimesUp social media hashtag campaigns, which helped bring awareness to the issues of sexual harassment and discrimination in Hollywood, may have recently arrived in Korea but local filmmakers have been working for some time to establish an organization to help combat these problems. Women in Film Korea, which advocates for the rights of female filmmakers, and the Korean Film Council (KOFIC, Chairman OH Seok Geun) have teamed up to end sexual assault and harassment in the Korean film industry by establishing the Center for Gender Equality in Korean Cinema, which opened on March 1.

The Center for Gender Equality in Korean Cinema will offer counseling and support for victims of sexual assault, conduct studies and research on gender across the entire film industry and make policy and activity suggestions. The center has already established a telephone hotline as well as an online registration form for victims, both of which can be found on the organization’s website.

Prior to opening the center, Women in Film Korea conducted a joint study with KOFIC on sexual assault and discrimination to look for ways to create an environment of gender equality for filmmakers. Results of the study, as well as upcoming activities planned for the new center, will be announced at an official press conference, which will be held on the April 12.
