Distributor Continues Relationship with BONG Joon-ho

In the midst of their massive success with PARASITE, which has become far and away the most successful Korean film of all time in the United States, North American distributor NEON has picked up the rights to director BONG Joon-ho’s 2003 classic Memories of Murder.

Director BONG’s second film, Memories of Murder was his first major hit, welcoming five million viewers in Korea in 2003, the second highest total for a Korean film that year. The thriller, which chronicles the failed search for the criminal behind the Hwaseong serial slayings in Korea in the mid-1980s, who was finally identified from forensic evidence earlier this year, is widely considered to be one of the greatest Korean films of all time. The film stars SONG Kang-ho, who also features in PARASITE.

NEON plans to give BONG’s serial killer thriller a proper theatrical release in America, which will be followed by a home market release. The outfit has put an unprecedented amount of work into the release of a Korean film in the American market with BONG’s latest opus, which became the first ever Korean film to pick up the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival this year.

Following its release in the United States on October 11, PARASITE has earned USD 18.27 million, the highest total for any foreign language release in America this year, and is still going strong. The film is also right in the thick of the Academy Awards conversation with many pundits seeing it as a serious contender for several major categories, including Best Film and Best Director, beyond the Best International Film category, which it is widely tipped to win.
