Buddhism Documentary Continues Impressive Festival Run

The Berlinale award-winning documentary Becoming Who I Was (2017) from directors MOON Chang-yong and JEON Jin is set to continue its impressive run of international film festival selections after having received a fresh invite to next month’s Phoenix Film Festival.

The non-fiction work follows the life of the young Angdu, a Rinpoche born as the reincarnation of a Tibetan high monk, who lived 1500 years ago. Directors MOON and JEON both have extensive experience in the TV documentary field. The film was released in Korea in November last year, where it attracted a sizable 37,600 viewers.

The film debuted at the Busan International Film Festival in 2016, where it earned the Grand Prix for Best Feature Film in the Generation Kplus section. Among the many other prizes it has won around the world are Grand Prizes from the Seattle International Film Festival, Moscow International Documentary Film Festival DOKer and Banff Mountain Film + Book Festival. The film has also received Audience Awards from the Autrans International Mountain Film Festival and Trento Film Festival.

This year’s Phoenix Film Festival will take place from April 5 to 15. The festival will open with Andrew Haigh’s Lean on Pete, which bowed at last year’s Venice International Film Festival. Bo Burnham’s Eighth Grade, first screened at the Sundance Film Festival in January, will then close the event.
