Aloners, the Grand Prize Winner at the 17th Osaka Asian Film Festival

Award-winning news of the film Aloners at film festivals continues. Director Hong Sungeun's Aloners won the Grand Prize (the Best Picture) at the 17th Osaka Asian Film Festival, which closed on March 20, 2022. 

 

The film Aloners, depicting the lives of single-person households of various generations with warm eyes, received two awards at the Jeonju International Film Festival in May 2021, recognized for its cinematic quality. Granting the Grand Prize to the film, the Osaka Asian Film Festival extolled the film saying, "We are impressed by the excellent usage of film language, such as shot which captures the protagonist alone." In addition, the judges said, "Loneliness and connection with others are both illuminated through human life and death, which gives the film peace and strength."

 

Aloners is a graduation work from the feature film program of the Korean Academy of Film Arts (KAFA) under the Korean Film Council, and it is the first time in three years that a Korean film has won the Grand Prize at the Osaka Asian Film Festival since 2019 when Director Yi Okseop from the KAFA for Maggie.

 

Featuring actors Gong Seungyeon, Jung Daeun, and Seo Hyunwoo, the film centers on Jina, an office worker in her 20s, with her colleagues Sujin, neighbors, and Jina's father in his 60s, depicting the image of the era gradually becoming fragmented through the lives of various single-person household generations.

 

Starting with the Jeonju International Film Festival in May 2021, Aloners has been well received at leading overseas film festivals, including the 46th Toronto International Film Festival and the 69th San Sebastian International Film Festival. Especially, Gong Seungyeon won the Best Actress at the 39th Torino Film Festival and Hong Sungeun won the Best New Director at the 43rd Cairo International Film Festival, etc., continuing the procession of winning awards and invitations from the total of 24 films festivals in Korea and overseas.
