Several Korean Filmmakers Invited to Park City Event

The Korean indie feature Goodafternoon Sweetdream, the debut of director Bang Seunghyeon, will take part in the Narrative Features competition at this year’s Slamdance Film Festival.

Established in 1995, the Slamdance Film Festival champions low-budget works (produced with budgets below USD 1 million) from new voices. The event takes place around the same time as the Sundance Film Festival. Both festivals usually take place in Park City, Utah, though this year Slamdance will take place online.

Bang’s work, which will have its world premiere in the Park City event, follows the story of the young woman Yewon, as she spends time with her friends following her father’s death, even though her mind is elsewhere.

Among the other films invited to this year’s Slamdance is The Space Between You & Me, from Korean-American filmmaker Lily Ahree Siegel. Featuring in the Documentary Shorts program, the film follows two Korean-American adoptees who navigate their transracial identity through meeting their birth mothers.

Selected for the Experimental Shorts program is Terrain Behind the Eyes from director Kim Sohee. The short describes how: “Strata of landscape, of tactile terrains, flow in their own time creating a poetic and meditative space.”

Korean-American Tee Jaehyung Park wrote and co-directed the short film Winter Insect, Summer Flower, about a trans woman's journey through the seasons, which screens in the ‘Department of Anarchy’ lineup.

This year’s Slamdance Film Festival will take place online from January 27 to February 6.
