Geoffrey Fletcher to Pen Remake of CJ’s Vietnamese Hit THE HOUSEMAID

PRECIOUS Scribe Joins Gothic Horror Update

An English-language remake of CJ Entertainment’s Vietnamese production The Housemaid (2016) is coming together, with Geoffrey Fletcher having signed on to pen the update.

Set in 1953, during the First Indochinese War, the film follows a young orphaned woman who becomes a housemaid in a haunted French rubber plantation home. She falls for the French master of the house, inadvertently awakening his deceased wife in the process.

The Housemaid was originally released in 2016, when it became a major hit for CJ Entertainment in Vietnam. A powerhouse financier and distributor in Korea, CJ has increasingly been branching out into international fare. The period horror title is one of several titles CJ has developed for and distributed in Vietnam, along with Miss Granny (2014), the fantasy family comedy that was originally made for the Korean market in 2014, before engendering several new versions in different languages across Asia and the rest of the world.

Fletcher is known for writing the script to Lee Daniels’ Precious, which earned him the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay in 2010, making him the first African-American to earn the coveted prize. According to Deadline, Fletcher stated that “The opportunity to re-imagine this compelling story in the context of American history is incredibly exciting.” He continued, “Collaborating with CJ Entertainment and Motor, an international team of talents, is equally thrilling and this unique project speaks to the creative power of diverse voices.”

CJ Entertainment will finance and produce the re-imagining, with Fred LEE, their Los Angeles-based Director of Development, and OK Jihyun, their Seoul-based Director of Development, currently overseeing development.

JEONG Tae-sung and Francis CHUNG of CJ are on board to produce along with Don Handfield from the production company Motor and Timothy Linh Bui (who produced the original) representing Happy Canvas. Meanwhile, Mike IM of CJ and Derek Nguyen, the director and writer of the original, will be the executive producer.
