Strong Demand for Local Production Facilities in Korea’s ‘City of Film’

The city of Busan has made considerable strides in its efforts to become an international production hub. Last year, the southern port city of 3.5 million people was home to 88 film and video productions.

According to information released by the Busan Film Commission on December 26, 32 feature films and 56 dramas were filmed in the city over the course of 2017. Productions included film, television dramas, television commercials and music videos. Production crews also spent more time in town, accumulating a total of 785 production days in the year. This is an increase of 55 days compared to 2016.

Busan’s production facilities were also put to good use in 2017. Films such as Steel Rain and Drug King took advantage of the city’s cutting edge Busan Cinema Studios, which boasts the largest sound stage in South Korea.

With so many productions taking place in town, the Cinema House Hotel in Busan also saw strong business, maintaining an average 79.5% occupancy rate through November. Located near Busan’s famous Haeundae Beach, the hotel, which opened last March, provides many facilities and services exclusively for filmmakers. In its first nine months of operation, staff members from 34 different productions made use of the hotel.

Designated an Unesco ‘City of Film’, Busan has grown into a regional production powerhouse. Working in conjunction with the city’s metropolitan government, the Busan Film Commission has used cutting edge facilities, healthy production incentives and Busan’s unique visual appeal to lure productions and to promote the city as a key international destination for both filmmakers and cinephiles.
