KANG Yoon-sung's Action Hit is Sole Korean Invitee
The Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) recently wrapped its 14th edition. The festival, which takes place annually in the dazzling desert metropolis of Dubai, United Arab Emirates, is hosted by the Dubai Entertainment and Media Organization and was established in 2004 to celebrate cinema and exchange culture. Since its founding, DIFF has grown to become the leading film festival in the region, and now boasts a project market (Dubai Film Market, DFM) that has been influential in nurturing Arab film talent. This year's festival programming featured over 120 films with one movie from South Korea, THE OUTLAWS (2017) being invited to screen out of competition as part of the festival's Cinema of the World section.
Released in early October of this year during the Chuseok holiday, KANG Yun-sung's crime action film THE OUTLAWS went on to become an unexpected hit. So far the film has amassed ticket sales of nearly 7 million and is currently the 3rd highest grossing domestic release of 2017.
THE OUTLAWS revolves around a fearless, hard-nosed Seoul police officer (Don LEE) who is given 10 days to put an end to a violent turf war taking place between local Chinese gangs.
In addition to making the Korean Association of Film Critics 2017 Top 10 list, THE OUTLAWS also received multiple nominations at the 38th Blue Dragon Film Awards, with JIN Seon-kyu winning the award for Best Supporting Actor.
In addition to DIFF, THE OUTLAWS was invited to the 2017 London Korean Film Festival and the 2nd Macau International Festival which took place in October and December respectively.
Meanwhile the 2017 edition of DIFF ran from December 6 to 13. The festival's top prize, the Muhr Award for Best Feature, went to Emirati director Abdullah Al JUNAIBI's drama thriller feature Camera. LEE Myung-se's The Duelist (2005) and BONG Joon-ho's Mother (2009) have been invited to previous editions of DIFF.
