CJ 4DPLEX Partners with Kitag to Open Venues in Switzerland

CGV Continues Aggressive European Expansion
CGV’s immersive CJ 4DPLEX cinema format will soon be available to theatergoers in Switzerland.
CJ CGV, Korea’s largest film distributor and exhibitor announced that it would be partnering with Switzerland’s Kitag Theaters to open a 4DX auditorium. With 85 screens and 17,000 seats, Kitag is the largest exhibitor in the country’s German-speaking region. The new 4DX theater is scheduled to open sometime in December at the Abaton Multiplex in Zurich.
CJ’s 4DX format coordinates seat motion technology and venue effects with on-screen visuals to create an immersive experience for the audience. 4DX venues boast over 20 effects including wind, snow, scents, fog and bubbles. Theater operators, in turn, can charge a hefty premium for 4DX screening tickets, boosting their revenue. According to CJ, there are currently more than 49,000 4DX seats in over 400 theaters in 50 countries.
CJ CGV has been expanding aggressively into Europe. In June the company announced its plans to open 4DX auditoriums in Western Europe by partnering with major French exhibitor Pathé and just recently it confirmed reports that it had established a joint venture in Russia to operate theaters in Moscow. CJ CGV has also been rumored to have interest in acquiring UK-based cinema chain Vue. CJ CGV previously acquired Turkey’s largest cinema chain in 2016. CJ CGV also operates theaters in some capacity in Hungary, Norway, the UK, Austria, Romania, Czech Republic and Poland.
With CJ CGV also continuing its expansion efforts in China and Southeast Asia, the company is on track to become one of the largest theater chain operators in the world.
