Bloodless, the VR documentary film by Gina KIM, will take part in the VR Competition of the 74th Venice International Film Festival. The production is a VR documentary film about the infamous, brutal murder of a Korean prostitute by a US soldier that took place in the military base town of Dongducheon in 1992. Portraying the last hours of her life in the camp town, the VR film is said to ‘transpose a historical and political issue into a personal and concrete experience’. It was introduced in the ‘Polemics: Technofeminism – Women, Science & SF’ section of the 19th Seoul International Women’s Film Festival. Bloodless was produced by Crayon Film and sponsored by Dankook University, VENTA VR and UCLA, where director KIM is working as a professor. 

Gina KIM is a director and professor on the world stage having directed Never Forever (2007) starring HA Jung-woo and Vera Farmiga and Final Recipe (2014) starring Michelle YEOH. She has a history with the Venice Film Festival as she has previously had her feature-length documentary Faces of Seoul screened there and was a jury member in the Orizzonti competition in 2009. Known as one of the three most prestigious film festivals in the world, along with the Cannes and Berlin International Film festivals, Venice will be the first of the “big three” to launch a competitive section dedicated to VR films. In addition to Gina KIM the new section will also include upcoming VR films by Laurie Anderson and Tsai Ming LIANG. Meanwhile, this year’s Venice Film Festival will be held from August 30th to September 9th.
