Romantic Novel Adaptation Beats Out Hollywood Blockbusters

Korea-Vietnam co-production The Girl from Yesterday, an adaptation of NGUYEN Nhat Anh’s popular 1990 novel of the same name, shot to the top of the Vietnamese box office after its release on July 21st. The film accrued USD 1.3 million dollars over its first weekend, when it beat both Dunkirk and Spider-Man: Homecoming. After ten days on release the film has earned USD 2.2 million.

The Vietnamese hit was directed by PHAN Gia Nhat Linh, who debuted with Sweet 20, the top local film of 2015. The Girl from Yesterday had its world premiere last month in the World Fantastic Blue section of the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (BiFan).

The film follows a rambunctious teenage boy who falls in love with a transfer student, but whose memories keep returning to his first love.

The Girl from Yesterday is the seventh joint Korean-Vietnamese production by CJ Entertainment. CJ has found great success in the market recently including the comedy Let Hoi Decide (USD 4.75 million) and their Vietnamese Miss Granny (2014) remake Sweet 20 (USD 4.76 million). CJ Entertainment’s sister company CGV Cinemas is the largest exhibitor in Vietnam.

The Vietnamese film exhibition sector is growing at an annual rate of around 35%, which is largely fueled by younger viewers. The Girl from Yesterday, with its youth and nostalgia themes, has been generating word of mouth in Korea as it continues its run.
