THE DAYS OF THE ROAD Depicts North Koreans’ 10,000 km Journey

Yonhap News Agency will feature a virtual reality (VR) animated documentary on North Koreans’ defecting. On July 12th, the news wire service company announced it was working on producing a VR, animated documentary titled The Days of the Road. In addition, VR company Gamsungsidae E&M and local animation startup Walking Cycle Studios have joined the project which is receiving support from the Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA).

The documentary follows North Korean defectors crossing the border into Korea. The producing team actually accompanied the refugees on their route, which was over 10,000 km and included China, Laos and the United States. The documentary highlights logging encampments on the border of China and North Korea, which lures and forces North Korean defectors into logging labor. The producers will report the exploitation of North Korean defectors in the documentary.

The Days of the Road was filmed using a rotoscoping technique that combines live-action images with animation to maximize reality. It references an Israeli animated war documentary film, Waltz With Bashir by Ari Folman, which is about the Beirut massacres by Israeli military forces. The Days of the Road will combine Korean style ink painting with universal animation techniques.

“As a journalist, I focused on checking the facts and reporting new information about North Korean defectors’ human rights.” said Hwang Dae-il, Yonhap News Agency’s Director of Contents who managed the production. Meanwhile, Yonhap will show the documentary on a digital interactive story page next month.
