EM CHUA 18 Broke All-Time Vietnam’s Box Office Record among June

Supported by Korean cinema chain CJ CGV, Vietnamese film made a domestic box office success. “Em Chua 18, which was collaborated with CJ CGV and local production company from planning, producing and marketing to screening, renewed the all-time record in Vietnam’s box office among June.” the company said.

Em Chua 18 tells the story of a 38-year old yoga teacher who falls for a woman over 20 years younger than him. It grossed USD 7.4 million from its release at the end of April until June, and has surpassed other current blockbuster hit movies in Vietnam such as Kong: Skull Island and The Fate of the Furious, according to CJ CGV.

The film was created by a strategic distribution contract between CGV and Vietnam’s leading production company Chanh Phuong Studios. “The film is a collaboration between two companies from planning, producing and marketing to screening, unlike conventional distributions.” CJ CGV said. It means the company gave advice on which genre Vietnamese audiences like and came forward to attract investment.

Meanwhile, CJ CGV entered the Vietnamese cinema market after acquiring local theater operator Megaster in 2011 and changing that brand’s name to CGV in 2014. Since then, it has focused on the distribution and screening of domestic commercial and art movies. This has been partially responsible for causing the market share of Vietnamese films to increase from 19% in early 2014 up to 32% by the end of 2015.
