BONG Joon-ho’s Latest Draws Global Critical Acclaim

Released on June 28th in 190 markets, BONG Joon-ho’s latest film was available just in time to be considered for half-year best of lists and has landed on several, including ‘The Best Movies and TV Shows of 2017, So Far’ feature in Vanity Fair.

Okja was featured on the unranked ten-title list, alongside acclaimed 2017 works such as break out horror Get Out and the Wolverine character swan song Logan. The film also landed on similar lists published in The Guardian and other outlets.

Featuring a global cast that includes Tilda Swinton, Jake Gyllenhaal, Paul Dano, Giancarlo Esposito and lead AHN Seo-hyun, the sixth film by acclaimed auteur BONG debuted in competition at the Cannes Film Festival. It was the first film financed by Netlflix to screen on the Croisette, along with Noah Baumbach’s The Meyerowitz Stories. It has raised some controversy as a big-budget film that is largely circumventing the traditional theatrical window yet critics have embraced the ambitious film of a country Korean girl who chases after her pet super pig around the world.

Currently on release in Korea, one of only a handful of global markets carrying the film in theaters, Okja has drawn in almost 240,000 viewers after two weeks on screens, despite not being shown at any of the major multiplex chains in the country.
