The 21st edition of the Fantasia International Film Festival, one of the largest genre film celebrations in North America, will kick off on July 13th with JUNG Byung-gil’s stylish action-thriller The Villainess, which recently impressed audiences at the Cannes Film Festival, where it featured in the Midnight Screenings last month.
Getting its international festival premiere in Montreal will be the timeslip thriller A Day from debut director JO Seon-ho. KIM Myung-min (Pandora, 2016) stars as a doctor who relives his daughter’s death in car accident over and over again and tries to put a stop to it.
Also among Fantasia’s first wave of announcements is the bowling drama SPLIT from first time director CHOI Kook-hee which will have its Canadian premiere. The film stars YOO Ji-tae of Old Boy (2003) as a washed up bowling star who takes a young, autistic prodigy under his wing.
Korean films have been a big draw in Montreal over the years. Last year’s top prize, the Cheval Noir Award, went to YEON Sang-ho’s zombie feature TRAIN TO BUSAN.
