Brief Festival Run for BONG Joon-ho’s Latest Ahead of Netflix Bow
BONG Joon-ho’s hotly anticipated new film
Okja, which debuted last month in competition at the Cannes Film Festival, is making a handful of festival stops before bowing globally on the Netflix streaming service on June 28. Following an invitation as the closing film of the Sydney International Film Festival, the fantasy adventure film has also been invited to take part in the ‘World Perspectives’ section of the Edinburgh International Film Festival.
Okja features Scottish actress Tilda Swinton in a lead role, alongside US stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Paul Dano and new Korean face
AHN Seo-hyun. The story follows a Korean girl in the countryside who chases after her pet Okja, a genetically modified pig who is taken back by a corporation for testing.
The film will have two screenings in Scotland, the first on the 25th and the second on the 28th, the same day that it launches internationally. Okja is scheduled to have limited theatrical runs in the US, the UK and Korea, where it will open on June 29th.
Okja is BONG’s follow-up to 2013’s
Snowpiercer, another big-budget sci-fi film with an international cast and English and Korean dialogue, which also featured Tilda Swinton.
This year’s Edinburgh International Film Festival will take place from June 21st to July 2nd.
