Dexter Studios Wins Best VFX Award at Hong Kong Film Awards

Korean Effects House Prized for Work on THE MONKEY KING 2
 

Korean VFX house Dexter Studios won the award for Best Visual Effects at the 36th edition of the Hong Kong Film Awards on April 9th. The award, which went to VFX supervisors Luke JUNG, KIM Sung-hoon, KIM Chan-soo and KIM Chul-min, was given for the company’s work on Chinese blockbuster The Monkey King 2

The Hong Kong Film Awards are one of the three major awards bodies for Chinese film, along with the Golden Horse Film Awards in Taiwan and the Golden Rooster and Hundred Flowers Awards in China. The Monkey King 2 beat out other contenders such as Sword Master, The Mermaid, Cold War 2 and Operation Mekong in its category.

Directed by SOI CHEANG Pou-Soi, The Monkey King 2 was a major success at the Chinese box office in 2016, accumulating USD 193.7 million. The film followed the first Monkey King (2014), also directed by SOI CHEANG, which earned USD 181.9 million.

Dexter Studios, which was founded by director KIM Yong-hwa to provide visual effects for his 2013 film Mr. Go, has quickly become one of the top players in visual effects in Korea and China. They also provided VFX work on the first The Monkey King and Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon (2013). Their upcoming projects include director KIM’s new two-part fantasy film Along with the Gods and The Monkey King 3.
