Korean Zombie Thriller Continues to Scale the Chart in Latin America

Global sensation TRAIN TO BUSAN is still scaling the world’s charts after opening in third position at the Argentine box office, it’s latest strong showing in Latin America after top five rank openings in Chile and Mexico late last year. By January 15th, the film, which is being distributed in the market by Energia, had grossed USD 471,000. TRAIN TO BUSAN was released in more than 80 theaters, which is an exceptionally large scale.

GONG Yoo stars in the film as a father who boards a high-speed train from Seoul to Busan with his daughter at the beginning of a zombie apocalypse. The film was released as Invasion Zombie in Argentina.

The top grossing Korean film of 2016, with over 11 million viewers recorded domestically, TRAIN TO BUSAN quickly became a sensation after its premiere in the midnight section of the Cannes Film Festival. After opening across Europe, North America and Asia, the film quickly became the most successful Korean film of all time in several markets, even beating out all Asian films in Hong Kong.

TRAIN TO BUSAN is the first live action film from director YEON Sang-ho, known previously for his acclaimed indie animations, such as The King of Pigs (2011) and The Fake (2013). YEON also directed the animated prequel to TRAIN TO BUSAN called Seoul Station (2016). He will next work on the Korean thriller Psychokinesis, which is expected to begin production this year.

Next for the film are several more European openings, including in Poland, Sweden and the Netherlands.
