KIM Sung-soo’s new dark thriller Asura : The City of Madness debuted in US theaters on October 7th and has amassed just shy of a USD 100,000 after ten days on release. The film had a good start when it grossed USD 21,253 from two theaters in its first weekend and expanded to 28 locations the following weekend, when it generated USD 69,275 in box office receipts.

Following its well-received debut at the Toronto International Film Festival, Asura : The City of Madness, the fourth big screen collaboration between director KIM and star JUNG Woo-sung after Beat (1997), City of The Rising Sun (1999) and Musa-The Warrior (2001), opened in its native Korea on September 28th and shot straight to first place. After just over three weeks in theaters the film has attracted 2.59 million viewers (USD 18.11 million).

Featuring JUNG as a dirty cop who works on the side as an enforcer for a crooked politician of a fictional satellite city of Seoul, Asura : The City of Madness follows a string of recent commercial thrillers that have taken aim at those who abuse power in Korea, including Veteran (2015), Inside Men (2015) and A Violent Prosecutor. The film co-stars HWANG Jung-min, KWAK Do-won, JU Ji-hoon and JUNG Man-sik.

Asura : The City of Madness will continue to seek out global audiences as it screens in more international events. Recently it was invited to Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas and the film will soon play at the Paris and London Korean Film Festivals.
