Breaking Even, Even Before Being on Air

Next Entertainment World (N.E.W.), a content distribution company, is making great news with the performance of Descendants of the Sun, a KBS TV drama. It is a N.E.W. product, written by KIM Eun-sook of The Heirs, featuring SONG Joong-ki and SONG Hye-kyo.

Unlike most Korean TV dramas, Descendants of the Sun has been 100% complete before releasing on air, which made great news. The USD 11.4 million production cost also made this drama famous even before being on air.

Descendants of the Sun has been sold to China at the highest price ever for a Korean drama. Thanks to such pre-sales and PPL, this drama is known to have already reached the break-even point. Once being released on air, this drama made yet more profit, making even greater news.

The viewing rate for Descendants of the Sun was over 30%, for the first time in 4 years since The Moon that Embraces the Sun. The online playing rights have been sold to iQiYi, a Chinese video streaming site, at USD 4.22 million, and Japanese copyrights at USD 1.76 million. In addition, the distribution rights have been sold to more than 30 countries including Taiwan, Thailand, UK, France, USA and Australia.

N.E.W. began as a film investment and distribution company in 2008, and grew into a content distribution company that it is today. Their distribution list includes Miracle in Cell No.7 (2013), The Attorney (2013) and Cold Eyes (2013), and they established HUACE&NEW last year with Chinese Huace Media, stepping in the Chinese market. Descendants of the Sun is the first TV drama that N.E.W. has invested in and produced.
