Mise-en-scène Short Film Festival Kicks off in Seoul

Former Festival Winners Include Berlinale-winning director NA Young-kil (Hosanna)

RYOO Seung-wan and MOON So-ri-directed Short Films to Receive Special Screenings

The 14th Mise-en-scène Short Film Festival opened Thursday (25 June) at Megabox with opening screener “Moving Self-Portrait 2015” that consists of video clips shot by the entrants in the festival’s competition section. The festival has made a series of “Moving Self-Portrait” editions each year.

In addition to 57 shorts in the competition, the festival this year also features two special sections dedicated to director RYOO Seung-wan and actress MOON So-ri, screening their previous shorts.

The competition titles are grouped into five different genres: “A City of Sadness” (social drama); “A Short Film about Love” (romance); “The King of Comedy” (comedy); “The Extreme Nightmare” (horror, fantasy); and “The 40,000 Blows” (thriller, action).

Jury members LEE Yong-ju (Architecture 101), BOO Ji-young (Cart), MIN Kyu-dong (The Treacherous), PARK Jung-bum (Alive) and more attended the opening ceremony, as well as the five honorary judges SHIM Eun-kyoung (Miss Granny); LIM Soo-jung (Perfect Proposal); KIM Kkob-bi (A Dangerous Woman); YOO Ji-tae (The Tenor Lirico Spinto); and BYUN Yo-han (Madonna).

Mise-en-scène Short Film Festival has so far discovered and supported renowned filmmakers to make an active foray into commercial films. NA Hong-jin, the winner of the festival’s The Extreme Nightmare section in 2005, who has made since then award favorite The Chaser and The Yellow Sea, KIM Han-min (Roaring Currents, War of the Arrows), winner of the second edition of the fest, and YOON Jong-bin (KUNDO: Age of the Rampant, Nameless Gangster: Rules of the Time) are the best examples.

Meanwhile, Mise-en-scène fest is the only film festival in Korea that distributes the box office revenue to filmmakers, who rarely make any profit from screening short films and therefore find it difficult to continue filmmaking. The festival has practiced the distribution policy since 2009.

The festival runs until 1 July.
