Action Black Comedy Set for a 2016 Release

Korean-Chinese co-production The Bad Man Must Die finished 2 months’ filming on 4 June, according to the project’s official Chinese microblog Weibo. The film started production on South Korea’s Jeju Island on 8 April.

Co-produced by two of the region’s big names, Kang Je-kyu (TaeGukGi: Brotherhood Of War) and Feng Xiaogang (Aftershock), Feng’s frequent collaborator Sun Hao directed the action black comedy.

Set on Jeju Island, Bad Man features stars Son Ye-jin (A Moment to Remember) and Chen Bo-lin (The Continent) from Korea and Taiwan, respectively. Chen plays a young Chinese man who travels to Korea, where he encounters a beautiful yet mysterious lady, played by Son. Korea’s Shin Hyun-joon, best known for TV dramas, plays a suspected killer.

With a budget of $18.2 million (KRW 20 billion), the film is one of the largest in a growing tide of Korean-Chinese co-productions, following the continued successes of A Wedding Invitation and 20! Once Again. Set for a 2016 release in both countries, Bad Man is produced by China’s New Power Film, with Huayi Brothers as the main investor and distributor.

In April, Kang made a comeback to the director’s chair after a 4-year hiatus with Salut d’Amour, which is in competition at the upcoming Shanghai International Film Festival.
