This Year’s Theme Is ‘Green Asia’

Going into its 11th year, the Green Film Festival in Seoul, the only environmental film festival in Korea, kicked off on Thursday, May 8th with an opening ceremony at the Cinecube Theater in Central Seoul. This year’s opening film was the American independent feature The Kings of Summer, by Jordan Vogt-Roberts.

The opening ceremony was hosted by festival co-director OH Dong-jin and film director PANG Eun-jin. Much like other cultural events of the past few weeks, such as the Jeonju International Film Festival, which ended last Saturday, the GFFIS Opening was toned down as a mark of respect towards the victims of the Sewol Ferry Disaster. This year’s Eco Friends, the cultural ambassadors for the festivals, are actors KANG Ha-neul and KIM So-eun.

Among the three Korean films in this year’s competition section are a pair of recent documentaries that also screened in Jeonju last week: Kelvin Kyung Kun PARK’s Berlinale-selected A Dream of Iron and MOON Seung-wook’s The Watchtower.

The 11th edition of the Green Film Festival in Seoul is taking place until Thursday, May 15th. This year’s screenings are taking place in the Gwanghwamun area in Central Seoul, at the Seoul Museum of History and the Cinecube and Indiespace theaters.
